Frequently Asked Questions
Clear answers to the questions we hear most often. If you don't find what you're looking for here, please get in touch. We're happy to help.
How do I know if I need a lawyer?
If you're facing a legal dispute, signing an important contract, buying or selling property, navigating a visa application, or dealing with an owners corporation issue, it's worth speaking to a lawyer early. An initial consultation can help you understand where you stand before anything is committed.
How much does a consultation cost?
Your initial consultation is a no-obligation conversation to understand your matter, explain your options, and give you an honest view of how we can help. We set out any fees clearly and in writing before you decide to proceed.
How long will my matter take?
Every matter is different. A straightforward conveyance may settle in weeks, while a contested dispute through VCAT or the courts can run for months. After reviewing your situation we'll give you a realistic timeline and keep you updated at every stage.
Will I be working directly with a lawyer?
Yes. We keep a deliberately small bench so the lawyer handling your matter is the one you actually speak to. You won't be passed between departments or left chasing updates.
What information should I bring to my first meeting?
Bring any documents relevant to your matter: contracts, correspondence, notices, court or tribunal papers, and any deadlines you're aware of. If you're unsure what's relevant, bring what you have and we'll work through it together.
Do you handle matters outside your listed practice areas?
Our focus is commercial, property, litigation, immigration, and owners corporation law. If your matter falls outside that, we'll tell you honestly and, where we can, refer you to a trusted specialist rather than stretch beyond our depth.
Is everything I tell you confidential?
Absolutely. Everything you share with us is treated in the strictest confidence and protected by legal professional privilege, from your very first enquiry onward.
Do you offer fixed-fee services?
Yes. For many standard matters, including residential conveyancing, straightforward commercial contracts, and certain immigration applications, we offer fixed-fee arrangements so you know exactly what you're paying before we start. We'll always discuss fee options upfront.
Can you help with urgent matters?
Yes. If you have an urgent deadline, such as a court date, a visa response, or a settlement, please call us directly on +61 3 9607 8315 and we will do our best to assist you promptly.
What areas of immigration law do you cover?
We assist with employer-sponsored visas (482 and 186), skilled visas (189 and 190), visa refusals and appeals, PIC 4020 character issues, the section 48 bar, and the Skills in Demand stream, among others. Please contact us to discuss your specific situation.
Can you assist clients outside Melbourne?
Yes. While our office is in Melbourne's CBD, we regularly assist clients across Australia and internationally, particularly with immigration and commercial matters. We can conduct consultations by phone or video conference.
How do I get started?
The simplest first step is to book a consultation. You can do this by calling +61 3 9607 8315, emailing info@gpslawyers.com.au, or choosing a time online using the 'Book a Consultation Now' button at the top of any page. We'll be in touch within 48 hours.
